New Delhi Resident Granted Bail in Mumbai Robbery Case

Mumbai, February 21, 2024 – In a significant development, the Sessions Court of Greater Mumbai has granted bail to 58-year-old Jaya Shivraj Govind, a resident of New Delhi, in connection with a robbery case registered at Bhandup Police Station. The court’s order, delivered by Additional Sessions Judge S.M. Tapkire (C.R.60), allows Govind’s release on a personal bond of ₹1 lakh with additional stringent conditions.

Case Background

Govind was arrested on January 19, 2024, in connection with Crime No. 02/2024 under Sections 392 (robbery) and 379 (theft) read with Section 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The prosecution alleged that she, along with three accomplices, was involved in a robbery at a religious gathering in Mumbai.

The incident occurred on October 31, 2023, during a Bhagavad Gita recitation program near the Sunshine Building. Two attendees, Radhika Singh and Anita Tiwari, reported the theft of their gold chains. Investigations, including CCTV footage analysis and technical evidence, reportedly linked Govind and her co-accused—identified as Anjali Singh, Mantosh, and Roshni Singharam—to the crime.

Prosecution’s Argument

The prosecution strongly opposed Govind’s bail, arguing that she played a key role in the crime. They pointed out that:

  • The three co-accused are still absconding.
  • A gold chain and a mobile phone were recovered from Govind.
  • Her bank account, containing ₹62,000, has been frozen.
  • She has allegedly been involved in similar offenses and might flee if released.

Defense’s Argument

Govind’s counsel, Advocates P.R. Patond and Haresh Rokade, contended that she was falsely implicated. They argued that:

  • There is no direct evidence linking her to the crime.
  • The trial court rejected her bail on mere presumptions.
  • She has already been in custody since January 19, 2024, and further detention is unnecessary.

Court’s Decision

After considering both sides, the court ruled that Govind could be released on bail with strict conditions. The court noted that while the allegations were serious, further investigation could continue without her custodial detention. The conditions imposed include:

  1. Furnishing a personal bond of ₹1 lakh with one or two sureties.
  2. Reporting to Bhandup Police Station every Monday until the charge sheet is filed.
  3. Attending all trial dates without fail.
  4. Submitting proof of residence and contact details.
  5. Refraining from tampering with evidence or influencing witnesses.
  6. Not leaving India without prior court permission.

Conclusion

The bail order provides temporary relief to Govind but maintains stringent restrictions to ensure cooperation with the investigation. The case will continue as authorities attempt to apprehend the remaining suspects and recover the stolen property. The outcome of the trial will ultimately determine her legal standing in the matter.
