Mumbai Sessions Court Grants Bail to Accused in 30 lacs Bank Loan Fraud Case

Deepak Prataprai Dani has been granted bail by the Greater Bombay Sessions Court, accused in a complex loan scam involving Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) policies.

On January 25, 2024, Judge S.B. Pawar of the Greater Bombay Sessions Court allowed bail for Deepak Prataprai Dani, implicated in a Rs. 30 lakh loan fraud case. Dani, along with co-accused Rani Durairaj and Sonali Borse, was accused of defrauding Punjab and Sind Bank, Prabhadevi Branch, by submitting forged LIC policies to secure loans.

The prosecution argued that Dani was involved in the conspiracy to defraud the bank, pointing to his presence during the signing of loan documents and the transfer of loan funds. However, Dani’s defense claimed he was unaware of the forgery, having been manipulated by the main accused due to his financial need, and that he only received Rs. 1,50,000 from the total loan amount, which he has since repaid.

After considering both sides, the court noted that Dani was not the primary beneficiary of the crime, with the main culprits being Rani Durairaj and Sonali Borse. The investigation was concluded, and with Dani’s undertaking to repay the amount he received, the court deemed him eligible for bail under specific conditions.

Conditions of Bail:
– A personal bond of Rs. 30,000 with one or two sureties of the same amount.
– Not to tamper with evidence or influence witnesses.
– To attend all trial dates regularly and not to commit similar offenses.

Conclusion: This decision highlights the court’s approach to assess individual involvement in group crimes, focusing on the actual benefit derived and cooperation with the investigation.
